Project Description

Hill House

2011

Michele Sandilands
Bianca Shaub

Hill House stands proud in its unique position in the aptly named hamlet of Misty Cliffs on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Its extraordinary setting between mountain and sea demanded a sensitive response. In essence: a light footprint on the ground. Timber frame construction ensured minimal damage to the mature fynbos vegetation. A cleverly placed courtyard gives much desired all-round wind-protected sunshine from behind. Sliding windows fill the house with extraordinary ocean sunsets while a filigree of light materials (corrugated aluminum and timber) allows for the house to integrate harmoniously with the mountains behind.
